came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom,
Paul didn't come as a philosopher or a salesman; he came as a witness (declaring to them the testimony of God). By “excellency of speech” he is referring to something that is highly esteemed at Corinth and among all the Greeks. They spoke with graceful and attractive eloquence.
