Romans 11:11-21
Description:
“Fate says the thing is and must be, so it is decreed. But the true doctrine is—God has appointed this and that, not because it must be, but because it is best that it should be. Fate is blind, but the destiny of Scripture is full of eyes. Fate is stern and adamantine, and has no tears for human sorrow. But the arrangements of providence are kind and good.”
Charles Spurgeon

Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Remainder of Israel Blinded, Romans 11:7-10

Free Bible Study: Paul’s Epistle to the Romans
In his lifetime, Paul launched at least four missionary journeys into previously unreached countries (3 recorded in Acts), survived tremendous opposition and hardship, and wrote letters to instruct and encourage those who had become believers Imprisonment often resulted from Paul’s disagreement with the religious legalism of the Jews. The Book of Acts ends with Paul under house arrest in his own rented house in Rome (Acts 28:30, 31). Events surrounding the end of Paul’s life are uncertain. After a possible release and a later imprisonment in Rome, Paul may have been tried and executed for his continued proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ (see 2 Tim.), which he expressed in his letter to the church at Rome.

During the Welsh Revival of 1904–1905, two children were overheard giving their understanding of revival. One child asked the other, “Do you know what happened at Rhos? The second child answered, “No, I don’t, except that Sunday comes every day now.” The first child asked again, “Don’t you know?” The second child replied, “No, I don’t.” So the first said, “Why, Jesus Christ has come to live in Rhos now.” Revival has occurred when Jesus takes up residency in our community and every day feels like Sunday.

Free Bible Study: Paul’s Letter to Titus
Titus, like First Timothy, was written by Paul after his release from Roman imprisonment and was also written to an associate who was given the task of organizing and supervising a large work as an apostolic representative. Paul left Titus on the island of Crete to “set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city” (1:5). Not long after Paul’s departure from Crete, he wrote this letter to encourage and assist Titus in his task. It stresses sound doctrine and warns against those who distort the truth, but it also is a conduct manual that emphasizes good deeds and the proper conduct of various groups within the churches. This epistle falls into two major sections: the appointment of elders (1); setting things in order (2–3).

The French have a proverb that provides insight for worship that states, “A good meal ought to begin with hunger.” It is hard to enjoy a meal when you are not yet hungry, but when you are starving, anything tastes good. As we approach worship with a hunger to meet God we will be filled and satiated. And when we come to worship filled up with our own self-sufficiency or full of preoccupied thoughts, we probably won’t experience meaningful worship. It’s true . . . good worship begins with a hunger for God.

Bonnie Hanson had a problem. Her three-year-old grandson begged her to take him with her to “big church.” Little Daniel asked, “Can we just go into God’s house and see God?” She consented to take him but worried about his expectations. Her fears were dispelled when they entered the sanctuary and Daniel pointed to a large cross. He grinned and said, “See, Grandma Bonnie, Jesus is already here waiting for us!” Worship might take on new meaning if we entered the sanctuary like little Daniel.

Archaeologists testify that throughout history there have been idols in every culture. Man is created with a need to worship, but when that pursuit for divine communion is misguided, idols are formed. Every idol reminds us of our need to worship. May we remember that there is only One who is worthy of worship.

Paul believed it was a privilege to preach the Gospel. He had to do it, because like Jeremiah the Prophet he had a burning fire that would not allow him to do anything else: “Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay” (Jer 20:9; KJV).

Max Lucado tells of a young man who approached his pastor at the close of a worship service and asked, “What can I do to find peace in my life?” The wise minister replied, “I’m sorry, but you’re too late.” The distraught man was perplexed. He said, “You mean I’m too late to find peace? You mean I’m too late to be saved?” The pastor answered, “No, you’re just too late to do anything about it. Jesus did everything that needed to be done two thousand years ago.” The beauty of God’s gracious atonement is that Christ did it all (1 Peter 3:18). We must simply embrace it.

It is not surprising that 55 percent of Americans believe “a good person can earn his way to heaven,” but an alarmingly high percentage of professing Christians believe the same thing. Recent studies by George Barna show 40 percent of those in America who say they have committed their life to Jesus Christ agree with the statement, “If you are a good person or do enough good things for others, you can earn a place in heaven.” Such thinking runs contrary to the clear teaching of Scripture (Ephesians 2:8–9), dilutes evangelistic fervor, and gives scores of people fictitious hope.

In 1 Peter 5:8, the apostle classified Satan as a “roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” This verse took on new meaning after interviewing a man who had just returned from Africa. He noted lions are nocturnal animals and most of their hunting is done at night. A conversation with my friends at the Houston Public Library Research Center confirmed his insight. Lions do not hunt exclusively at night, but most of their hunting does occur under the cloak of darkness. Their eyesight is designed for preying on unsuspecting victims in the dark. No wonder Peter spoke of the deceiver as a lion. It was in the dark, away from Christ, that he fell prey to the temptation of denial. When we drift from the light and start loitering in the shadows we become easy prey for the lurking lion. Stay out of the dark and you will have a much greater chance of staying alive.

Several years ago, Success magazine reported on a Gallup poll that sought to define success. The people’s responses fell into twelve categories. Topping the dozen definitions was “good health.” of those surveyed 58 percent equated good health with success. Good health is to be valued and never taken for granted, but success is far more than dodging the doctor’s office. The Bible doesn’t speak of success in terms of health. Jesus said, “By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples” (John 15:8).

Charles Spurgeon appropriately said, “Success can go to my head and will unless I remember that it is God who accomplishes the work, that he can continue to do so without my help, and that he will be able to make out with other means whenever he wants to cut me out.” A true leader of God will recognize the reality that he or she is simply an instrument in the hands of God, and any success belongs exclusively to the Lord.

The major theme of Romans is that of righteousness received as a gift from God, not achieved by works of the Law (Rom. 1:16, 17). Salvation comes by grace through faith (Rom. 3:21–31). Other themes include mankind’s rejection of God’s revelation, death to sin and life in Christ by the Holy Spirit’s power, Christian freedom, God’s sovereignty, God’s plan of salvation as encompassing Gentiles as well as Jews, obedience to Christ involving sacrificial commitment, and practical Christian living.

Stress has become one of the most frequently used words in America as problems are often described as “stress related.” Ironically, those who understand the pressures of life have estimated that 80 percent of our stress is created solely by our minds. That means most of what we call “stress related” is really just “mind related.” Set your mind on the things above (Colossians 3:2) and life will seem a lot less stressful.

When walking through the rural roads of India, you will occasionally come across a post with a sturdy shelf about shoulder height. These posts are called Soma Tonga, which means “resting place.” As people travel on foot, they can stop at a Soma Tonga and place their heavy load on the shelf for relief. Once rested, they can continue their journey. One can easily see why Christians in India call Jesus “My Soma Tonga.” He has told us to “cast our burdens upon him” (1 Peter 5:7) and “you shall find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–30).

Many Christians have either heard or sung, “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.” It was written by Rick Founds in 1989 and has since become one of the best-known and well-loved praise songs in the world. This beautiful chorus provides a clear summary of the gospel and offers a natural response of adoration for what God has done. Although Founds has written nearly five hundred praise songs, this song has one of the most interesting stories. He developed a unique habit of playing his guitar while reading the Bible. He just plunks along a tune that seems to go along with whatever he’s reading. On this particular morning he was marveling at God’s love for rebellious, fallen humanity. Suddenly, the now famous chorus emerged: “You came from heaven to earth to show the way . . . From the earth to the cross my debt to pay . . . From the cross to the grave . . . From the grave to the sky . . .” Now people around the world give musical expression to their love for God because a guy who does research and development at a fiber optics company took the time to let God’s Word become living and active. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong. All things most desirable for man’s welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it.” [Christian History, Issue 33, p. 13]
