(8) HIS LAW CANNOT MAKE HIM RIGHTEOUS
Romans 2:17-24

17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God,
Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law. Israelites who remained in Palestine, or who returned to it after the Babylonian captivity, were designated as “Jews,” even though tribes other than Judah were included. Paul calls himself a “Jew” in [1]Acts 21:39 but “an Israelite” in [2]Romans 11:1 and “a Hebrew” in [3]Philippians 3:5. All three names refer to the same people; but in a technical sense “Hebrew” is the racial name, “Israel” is the national name, and “Jew” is the religious name of the sons of Jacob. The Jews rested in the law because it was described as “wisdom and … understanding in the sight of the nations” (Deut 4:6). The Jew did not have to travel around the world to study in a distant university. He did not have to rely on the philosophy of the Gentiles. The Jew trusted his law to be all that he needed and the best education he could get. Thus he boasted in the God who gave that law. There is no doubt that many Jews felt they were immune from God’s judgment. God would never send a Jew to hell, they thought. The Gentiles, on the other hand, were fuel for the flames of hell. Paul must now destroy this pretension by showing that under certain circumstances Gentiles may be closer to God than Jews.

Read: “Heaven is a Real Place.”
I believe that Christians are sometimes too eager to proclaim the frightening fires of hell, but they hesitate to hold out hope for the golden streets of heaven. Nevertheless, in our world most people have had a taste of hell, but they have never even dared to imagine the hope of heaven.

Today, I want you to look at that blessed hope, which awaits those who dare to believe. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” Jesus wants us to trust Him and the Father. This is the key to heaven, and that great gospel hymn expresses that thought when we sing,“Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey!”

Divisions and Wisdom, 1 Cor. 1.10-17

Divisions and Wisdom, 1 Cor. 1.10-17
One of the principal objectives of this letter was to correct the problems which had arisen in the Corinthian church; the first one the apostle mentions is the divisions which existed there. He urges the members of that church to come together and form bonds of unity (v. 10). Why did he do it? He had received information from one of the members he trusted who told him about the discord that was taking place (v. 11). These divisions occurred when the members began to align themselves with different religious teachers who became party leaders (v. 12). The sin and silliness of such divisions is obvious, because a church that has several religious leaders who embrace different religious convictions cannot be centers of unity.

One of the most interesting prophesies concerning John the Baptist is Malachi 3:11, “See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. God spoke this to the people of Israel, because they had asked, “……Where is the God of Justice?” (Malachi 2:17).
There are two messengers in this verse. The first is John the Baptist, “the one who will prepare the way” and the second is Jesus, “the messenger of the covenant.”

The physical union of marriage made man and wife “one flesh” (Gen 2:24). When that union was broken adultery was committed. Jesus supports this interpretation when He says, “whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery” (Mt 5:32). The primary purpose of this law was to prevent the man from taking her again after she had married another man—it’s “an abomination before the LORD,” according to Deuteronomy 24:4. This law was intended to discourage, rather than encourage, divorce.

They had God’s law concerning divorce, but the grounds for divorce are a point on which the Jewish Bible scholars, who lived during the early New Testament times, differed widely. One school of thought limited it to moral wrongdoing by the woman, while another allowed divorce over trivial matters, such as, if the wife burnt the food she was cooking for her husband. The Lord’s divine ideal for marriage is clearly a lifelong bond that unites husband and wife in a “one flesh” relationship, according to Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:5.

Apostles and Wisdom, 1 Corinthians 3.5-3.17

Apostles and Wisdom, 1 Corinthians 3.5-3.17
This lesson deals with Harvesting and Building.
• Harvesting (5–9). Every child of God has a place in the Lord’s harvest, and all are doing His work (John 4:34–38). There must be no competing or comparing, because the Lord alone acknowledges the work and gives the reward. It makes no difference who the servant is so long as Jesus Christ is Lord of the harvest.
• Building (10–17). Paul writes about the local church and the materials we put into it as we minister (Prov. 2:1–5; 3:13–15). Substituting man’s wisdom for God’s Word means building with perishable materials that will burn up at the judgment seat of Christ.
