Here in these final five verses the apostle sums up the argument, and as he does, he continues to illustrate it by pointing out how the natural body resembles the church of Christ—the relationship in which Christians stand to Christ and one another. The church, that is, the entire collective body of Christians, in all ages, is His body. Every Christian is a member of His body, and all other Christians are related to him since they are fellow-members.

The men who beat upon the door did not want to know what type of person he was, what country he came from, his profession, where he was going, and what business he had here; but they only wanted one thing. They wanted to have carnal knowledge of the young Levite in an unnatural way, or commit that sin with him which is commonly called sodomy; and the men of Sodom expressed their lust by the same word, (see Genesis 19:5, above).

When we belonged to the old creation under Adam, death and sin reigned; now that we are in Christ in the new creation—“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17), grace is reigning, and we are reigning in life—“For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ”  (v. 17). You can live like a king by the grace of God!

Receiving the Word (Luke 24:44—45). Their hearts were troubled, frightened, and doubtful; yet the Lord lovingly reassured them with His word. We today cannot see or feel His body, but we have the Holy Spirit to make Him real to us from the Scriptures. When your heart is troubled or frightened, see Jesus in the Word (John 14:1–6). When your faith is weak, see Jesus in the Word (Rom. 10:17). The first step toward peace is receiving the Word.

Our Bible lesson is from the twenty-ninth chapter of Genesis, and I would like to place the following words at the beginning: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 6:7-8) now.

We have a living Lord. Jesus is alive, and the gospel message is true! Witnesses who saw Him have passed along their testimony to us. When you trust Him, you receive resurrection life, eternal life--"Verily, verily, I say unto you,  He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24); death can hold you no more.

Josiah was one of the good kings of Judah and during his rein a great discovery was made.  Hilkiah, who was the high priest during the time when the temple was being rebuilt, announced to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.” (2 Kings 22:8) From that simple statement comes one of the most interesting happenings in the Old Testament.  Not only did this discovery have significance then, it has a message for now.

It seems that the apostle was made aware of the most amazing things happening in the Church of Corinth through the action of the Holy Spirit, but in an age of ecstasy (supernatural, sensuous communication with a deity) and enthusiasm (divination, dreams, revelations, visions) there can be hysterical excitement and self-delusion as well as the real thing, so he felt it necessary at this time to address the issue of spiritual gifts.

There was never a dull moment around old Jerusalem First Church! Pentecost came in a blast of Glory.  It was fifty days after Jesus’ Resurrection when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers during the Feast of Pentecost.  The presence of God filled the room, where they were praying, with wind and fire.  The Holy Spirit had been promised by Christ and now He had arrived to fill and equip each believer for a special roll in Christ’s ministry.
