Paul and Wisdom, 1 Corinthians 2.1-5

Paul and Wisdom, 1 Corinthians 2.1-5
In this passage the apostle reminds the Corinthians how he acted when he first preached the gospel to them. Friends, I need to say this and I hope you are not offended; but, I don’t think Paul could make it as a pastor today, because he seems to have only one subject for his sermons; and today our ministers must entertain us, manage a staff, visit the sick, teach a Sunday school class, attend every church meeting and function, preach three times a week, etc. He says in verse 2, that He determined to know nothing among them but Jesus Christ and him crucified —that is, to know nothing but this, to preach nothing but Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

The Period Of The Judges, How Gideon Formed His Attack on the Enemy Camp, Judges 7:16-20

The Period Of The Judges, How Gideon Formed His Attack on the Enemy Camp, Judges 7:16-20
And he divided the three hundred men, into three companies, one of which he commanded. He placed one hundred men in each company, partly to give the appearance of an organized army, with a right and left flank, and partly to fall upon the camp of Midian from three directions to give the impression that they were attempting to surround the camp. Gideon, by dividing his army, small as it was, into three companies would facilitate his deception because great armies (and that was the impression he wanted to make) were usually divided into the right wing, the left wing, and the main body of the army.

Paul's Epistle to the Romans, The Blessing of Hope, Romans 8:18-25

Paul's Epistle to the Romans, The Blessing of Hope, Romans 8:18-25
The greatest shame we may endure for Christ here on earth will be a mere trifle when He calls us forth and publicly acknowledges us before the hosts of heaven. Even the excruciating pain of the martyrs will seem like pinpricks when the Savior graces their brows with the crown of life. Elsewhere Paul speaks of our present sufferings as light afflictions which are only for a moment, but he describes the glory as an exceeding and eternal weight—“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:17).

Water baptism does not save you, but every believer should be baptized, because Jesus, Himself, commanded it. He said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19) It was so important to Jesus that He went to John the Baptist to be baptized by him in the Jordan River.

Yola

Yola

We have all heard the story of when Peter denied that he knew Jesus. It happened when Jesus was arrested and taken to the high priest to face charges of blasphemy against God. Peter followed Jesus “from afar.” He feared that Jesus was going to be put to death, and maybe they would come after him and his friends. He tries to make himself as inconspicuous as possible, but it doesn’t work. A little wisp of a maid caused him to deny his Lord.

The Church in Corinth and Wisdom,

The Church in Corinth and Wisdom,
Many of the earliest Christians were slaves, a majority were poor, most were uneducated; and few of them had any claim to distinction in the wretched world of their day; but they were the roots from which all that is holy and beautiful has blossomed in succeeding centuries.

This is Gideon’s final lesson before he goes into battle. He goes down to the edge of the camp and eavesdrops while two soldiers are talking. They frankly believe that God is going to deliver the Midianites into the hands of Gideon and his host. God permits Gideon to hear this conversation to encourage him just prior to the battle

John was Jesus’ cousin. The Bible doesn’t say if they had a relationship, prior to John baptizing Him in the Jordan River. We do know that His mother, Mary, visited his mother at the time they were both pregnant. I wonder how well John and Jesus knew each other. If they had never met, I assume that Jesus at least knew of His cousin and vise versa.

Divisions and Wisdom, 1 Cor. 1.10-17

Divisions and Wisdom, 1 Cor. 1.10-17
One of the principal objectives of this letter was to correct the problems which had arisen in the Corinthian church; the first one the apostle mentions is the divisions which existed there. He urges the members of that church to come together and form bonds of unity (v. 10). Why did he do it? He had received information from one of the members he trusted who told him about the discord that was taking place (v. 11). These divisions occurred when the members began to align themselves with different religious teachers who became party leaders (v. 12). The sin and silliness of such divisions is obvious, because a church that has several religious leaders who embrace different religious convictions cannot be centers of unity.

Gideon doubted God’s promise. Did God really want him to lead God’s army? What did he know about warfare? After all he was only an ordinary farmer; and there were others in the tribe who could do a much better job. So, before he led the attack, he asked God to give him two more signs.

Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Struggle of a Saved Soul, Romans 7:15-25

Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Struggle of a Saved Soul, Romans 7:15-25
Several interpretations have been suggested for these verses:1. A reflection of life before conversion.
2. The experience of the saved or unsaved, who seek merely to obey the Law.
3. A picture of the carnal Christian’s internal struggle between the spiritual nature’s desire to obey God and the fleshly nature’s desire to go one’s own way.
4. The process of growing sanctification, after conversion.

Commentary on 1st Corinthians, 1 Corinthians 1.4-1.9
4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

I thank my God always on your behalf (account), The apostle begins this passage with thanksgiving for various blessings bestowed upon this church, which is a proof of the apostle's great love for it, and how much its welfare was on his heart. The object of thanksgiving is God, because he is the author of all mercies, and therefore, he should be given the glory and praise for them.

Gideon Summons an Army

34Then the LORD'S Spirit gave Gideon strength. So Gideon blew the ram's horn to summon Abiezer's family to follow him.
Judges 6:34 (GW)
But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; not the spirit of prophecy, as Maimonides (See Article 6.4; Pg. 217), who calls this spirit the first degree of prophecy, but a spirit of fortitude and courage, as spoken in the Targum ; the Spirit of God filled him, or, as in the Hebrew text, "clothed" him with zeal, strength, and might, moved and animated him to engage with this great body of people that has come into the land that God gave to Israel, to ravage and wreak havoc on it, but the Lord God commissioned Gideon to attempt the deliverance of Israel from their bondage to this foreign army.

Shackles of a Saved Soul

(for I speak to those who know the Law). The passage refers to the Law of the state (Roman Law), and the Law of God (Mosaic Law), which had over a thousand years trial with God’s chosen people. Both divine and civil Law maintain a hold on a man for as along as he lives. There is nothing wrong with the Law, it was good; the problem was that Israel did not keep the Law. Remember, that Stephen in his defense said that they had “…received the Law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it’ (Acts 7:53). Peter calls it a yoke “which neither our fathers or we were able to bear” (Acts 15:10). On the occasion that this letter was written, the apostle is talking to those who, whether Jews or Gentiles by birth, were acquainted with the principles of Law, and so were familiar with what is conveyed in the following statement.

One Thing We Need

Now, let me reread the last verse from the King James Bible, because there you hear the title of our devotion, “But One Thing is Needful”.  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:42 (KJV)

Here in our text, Christ tells us that there is only one thing needful; but He never really says what that one thing is. But if we look closely at the story in our text, I bettcha we can figure out what that one thing is.

ractcal Sanctifiction

Being a Christian is a matter of bondage or freedom. Who is your master, Jesus Christ or the old life? You are not under the authority of Moses (v. 15), but that does not mean you have freedom to break God’s moral law (8:1–5). Yield yourself to the Lord; He is the most wonderful Master, and the “salary” He pays lasts forever.

The Bible is silent about Jesus from the time He was 12 years old until He began His ministry, at thirty. All we know comes from Luke 2:51-52. There it says that He was obedient to His parents and that He grew physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.

Lesson 1.1: Address (1 Corinthians 1.1-1.3)
Paul has been called by God, that is, set apart by the will of God. Now, two things are required of anyone that would be listened to in the Church, and would occupy the place of a teacher; first, he must be called by God to that office, and second he must faithfully discharge its duties. Paul here lays claim to both. For the name, Apostle, implies that the individual conscientiously acts the part of an ambassador for Christ, and proclaims the pure doctrine of the gospel. But, no one ought to assume this honor to himself, unless he has been called to it.

And there came an angel of the Lord. This was not the prophet mentioned before (vv 1-10), but an angel of God, as expressed here, and not a created one, but the Angel of Jehovah's presence, the Word and Son of God, and who is expressly called Jehovah himself, (see Judges 6:14[1], Judges 6:23[2], Judges 6:24[3]). Virtually all commentators agree that this was a “theophany,” that is, an appearance of God in human form as the angel of Yahweh.

2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Paul’s characteristic expression, “Certainly not” (God forbid in the KJV), shows how appalled he is at the mere suggestion of continuing in sin once we have experienced the grace of God. We who died to sin refers to a definite occasion in our past, namely, when through faith in Christ we passed from death unto life. Death to sin liberates a person from sin’s control, it brings him (or her) a new life, and it involves separation from sin and a desire to please God and to stop sinning.

All Christians experience the new birth and by baptism are dedicated and devoted to Christ, and are under strict obligations to be holy. But in the true church of God, all are sanctified in Christ Jesus, all are called to be saints, all recognize Him as God manifest in the flesh and the source of all the blessings of salvation; furthermore, all acknowledge and obey him as their Lord, and as Lord of all; and no others are included.

Gideon was an unlikely candidate for God’s “Hall of Fame” [1](Heb. 11:32 ). When God called him, he was hiding. When God spoke to him, he raised problems instead of trusting promises. One of his favorite words was “if” (vv. [2]13 , [3]17 , [4]36 ; think about how this little word comes into play in these NT verses, [5]Mark 9:22–23 ). When Gideon did start to obey God, he worked at night [6](v. 27 ) because he was afraid of being discovered and he had to have repeated reassurance that the Lord was with him.

Corinth exceeded all the cities of the world, for the splendor and magnificence of its public buildings, such as temples, palaces, theatres, porticos, cenotaphs, baths, and other edifices; all enriched with a beautiful kind of columns, capitals, and bases, from which the Corinthian order in architecture had its beginning. Corinth is also celebrated for its statues; those, especially, of Venus, the Sun, Neptune and Amphitrite, Diana, Apollo, Jupiter, Minerva, etc.

Introduction to 1st Corinthians

Paul, known as the apostle to the Gentiles was successful in converting many of them ([2]1Co 12:2), and even some Jews ([3]Ac 18:8). He had been the instrument of God for converting many Gentiles and some Jews in spite of the passionate opposition of the Jewish leaders ([4]Ac 18:5), during the year and a half in which he ministered there.

Justification is illustrated in the Old Testament.
Romans 4:1-25

Paul has just firmly established that the righteousness of God is apart from the law (3:21) and that man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law (3:28). He is aware, however, that the Jew will offer the case of Abraham as rebuttal to this teaching. Paul’s own people were still engrossed with the idea that being Jewish ought to give them certain privileges in the eyes of God. Thus, in this chapter, Paul analyzes the principle by which God saved Abraham. The father of Israel is an illustration of God’s message of salvation in the Old Testament.

This young man approaches the Lord Jesus.  He addresses Him as Good Master in an attempt to flatter Him. Luke identifies him as a ruler, so he was no doubt wealthy and well educated, a member of the Sanhedrin or a synagogue ruler.  He is willing to admit that Jesus is good, and probably the enemies of Jesus would not have gone that far. Lesson 2.8: Servants of Christ and Their Work Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4.1-4

Many Corinthian believers were rejecting both Paul’s teaching and his authority. Paul reasserted his authority over them, all the while emphasizing his role as “servant” and “steward” of the mysteries of God—the truths of the gospel. A “steward” (Gk. oikonomos) is the servant who is entrusted with the administration of his master’s business or property. Life, itself is a stewardship, so be faithful (vv. 1–5). We judge ourselves, and others judge us; but the Final Judge is the Lord. Live to please Him alone.

Lesson #12: The Need of the Whole World.
Romans 3:9–20

Paul has shown that the heathen are lost, because even though they had the witness of both nature and conscience, they suppressed the truth God gave to them. He has shown also that the moral man is lost, because even though he put on an outward show of piousness in order to judge the heathen, inwardly he was guilty of the same sins.

Paul's Epistle to the Romans

Paul's Epistle to the Romans

Begin today to study the Bible because what God says is important!

A good place to start is a study of Paul’s epistle to the Romans.  Lesson #11 is typical—read it to see if it is right for you.

Lesson #11: Availability of a Righteousness from God
Romans 3:1-8

In the first eight verses of chapter 3, Paul continues the subject of the guilt of the Jews. He anticipates arguments in rebuttal to his conclusion that neither Israel’s law, her circumcision, or her birth could save her. These theoretical objections are stated in the odd-numbered verses and Paul’s answer to each objection is stated in the even-numbered verses.

FREE DEVOTIONS AND SERMONS

You may not be a preacher, but you may enjoy reading sermons and devotions and you can use them to aid your Bible study. “The Trinity” is a devotion given in Nursing Homes.

Text: For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one (1 John 5:7)

The doctrine of the Trinity is a distinctive mark of Christianity. Though there are “triads” of divinities in many of the world’s religions and philosophies, none of these carries any similarities to the Christian teaching concerning the Trinity.

Harmony of the Gospels

Harmony of the Gospels

FREE BIBLE STUDY—“ Proclamation by the Angels”

I cannot fathom the great love of God that was made known to us in His Son; that Jesus would give up His glory to come into the world as a lowly baby. Why would He suffer and die for any man? In 1 Timothy 3:16, it speaks of this great mystery, “Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great; He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen of angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.” This verse probably constitutes one of the earliest creeds of the church.

Harmony of the Gospels is a study of the life of Jesus presented in chronological order with emphasis on how the four Gospels fit together to tell His story.

The Period Of The Judges

A good place to start is a study is the Book of Judges.  Lesson #9 is typical—read it to see if it is right for you.

Lesson #9: Godly Generation Dies—Judges 2.6-10

The older generation failed to teach the younger generation God’s truth as Moses had commanded them ([1]Deut. 6:1–9 ). It is bad enough that they forgot Joshua, their second greatest leader, but how could they forget the Lord?

Lesson #7: Birth of Jesus Christ
(Isaiah 7:14) Matthew 1:24-25, Luke 2:1-7
Jesus was born at the time that God had set before the world was created. Many things had to come together in anticipation of this great event. In Ephesians 4:4, it says of this time, “But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.”

A Man Who Understood a Woman
Jesus met a Samaritan woman at a public well at noon—and he spoke to her. She was surprised at that for a lot of reasons, no doubt. But then he took the conversation in an unexpected direction. It was as if he knew something. Indeed he did!

Jews and Greeks and Wisdom, 1 Cor 1.18-25

Jews and Greeks and Wisdom, 1 Cor 1.18-25

Read: “Jews & Greeks and Wiadom”

Paul had the best Jewish education available at that time; but the plain preaching of a crucified Jesus, was more powerful than all the oratory and philosophy of the heathen world. This is the essential point and substance of the gospel. Christ crucified is the foundation of all our hopes, and the fountain of all our joys. And by his death we live. The preaching of salvation for lost sinners by the sufferings and death of the Son of God, if put in plain words by a child of God, appears foolish to those on the road to destruction. The immoral, the greedy, the self-righteous, and pompous, know that the Gospel opposes their favorite activities. But those who receive the gospel with faith, and whose minds are enlightened by the Spirit of God, see more of God's wisdom and power in the doctrine of Christ crucified, than in all his other works. God has allowed most of the world to follow the dictates of man's corrupt nature, and the outcome has shown that human wisdom is foolishness, and is unable to discover or retain the knowledge of God as the Creator. It pleased Him, through the foolishness of preaching, to save those that believe in Christ.

(8) HIS LAW CANNOT MAKE HIM RIGHTEOUS
Romans 2:17-24

17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God,
Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law. Israelites who remained in Palestine, or who returned to it after the Babylonian captivity, were designated as “Jews,” even though tribes other than Judah were included. Paul calls himself a “Jew” in [1]Acts 21:39 but “an Israelite” in [2]Romans 11:1 and “a Hebrew” in [3]Philippians 3:5. All three names refer to the same people; but in a technical sense “Hebrew” is the racial name, “Israel” is the national name, and “Jew” is the religious name of the sons of Jacob. The Jews rested in the law because it was described as “wisdom and … understanding in the sight of the nations” (Deut 4:6). The Jew did not have to travel around the world to study in a distant university. He did not have to rely on the philosophy of the Gentiles. The Jew trusted his law to be all that he needed and the best education he could get. Thus he boasted in the God who gave that law. There is no doubt that many Jews felt they were immune from God’s judgment. God would never send a Jew to hell, they thought. The Gentiles, on the other hand, were fuel for the flames of hell. Paul must now destroy this pretension by showing that under certain circumstances Gentiles may be closer to God than Jews.

Yola

Yola

Read: “Heaven is a Real Place.”
I believe that Christians are sometimes too eager to proclaim the frightening fires of hell, but they hesitate to hold out hope for the golden streets of heaven. Nevertheless, in our world most people have had a taste of hell, but they have never even dared to imagine the hope of heaven.

Today, I want you to look at that blessed hope, which awaits those who dare to believe. Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” Jesus wants us to trust Him and the Father. This is the key to heaven, and that great gospel hymn expresses that thought when we sing,“Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey!”
