Jabez was well intentioned, wealthy, and famous; he was a man of prayer. The best honor that any man can have is to have a relationship with God, and Jabez did.

The Period Of The Judges, Delilah’s First Attempt, Judges 16.4-9

The Period Of The Judges, Delilah’s First Attempt, Judges 16.4-9

Two words describe this chapter, Defilement and Deception.

Defilement. God had rescued Samson from so many tight places that he was sure he was invulnerable, so he continued to play with sin and defile himself. A Spirit-filled God-called leader has no right doing what Samson did. His body belonged to God (1 Cor. 6:12–20).

Deception. The harlot in Gaza deceived him and so did Delilah. You would think that by then Samson would have been alert to danger, but his conscience was defiled and his moral senses were destroyed. Samson even deceived himself by thinking he had everything under control, but he was wrong.

Harmony of the Gospels, The Service of the Seventy

Harmony of the Gospels, The Service of the Seventy

Jesus was a trainer of men.  The Lord sent out seventy disciples who were to prepare the way for the ministry of Jesus.  He gave these seventy men a burden for the souls of men. He told them that the harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few.  He sent them out two by two to help meet this need.  The work was for a limited time, and their office was temporary because Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to die for the sins of the world.

Harmony of the Gospels, Galilee Departure and Samaritan Rejection

Harmony of the Gospels, Galilee Departure and Samaritan Rejection

Matthew calls our attention to the movement of Jesus around Palestine.  Jesus enters Judea again and moves to Jerusalem for the last time before He is crucified.  There is definite intention in everything He does and says.

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, Where the Spirit of the Lord Is
Acts 2 records the awesome historical event that changed the church forever-the coming of the Holy Spirit into the life of the church on the Day of Pentecost.
It happened just as definitely as Jesus’ birth and resurrection, and the believers were never the same.
The church really became the church at Pentecost.
We don’t need Pentecost again as such, just as we don’t need Jesus’ birth, death, or resurrection to occur again.
But we constantly need the power of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, in control of our lives and the church.

The Period Of The Judges, Samson’s Arrest and Retaliation

The Period Of The Judges, Samson’s Arrest and Retaliation

This incident also shows Samson's great faith; he is willing to put himself in a difficult position, trusting that God will take care of him.

The situation that exists is that Judah surrenders Samson to the Philistines, which shows just how much they are under the thumb of the Philistines; they would rather please their oppressors than support their deliverer. The large number of men who went to arrest him is a tribute to his strength and bravery.

Harmony of the Gospels, Jesus Rejects Brother’s Advice

Harmony of the Gospels, Jesus Rejects Brother’s Advice

The event in this passage took place in Galilee, at the Sea of Galilee; but before that, Jesus had been in Jerusalem where there had arisen the controversy concerning Him at the pool of Bethesda.  This event took place in April, about one year before the Cross.  During the last year of His ministry, Jesus confined Himself to Galilee because of a Jewish plot to kill Him.  It says that He walked no longer in Jewry; that means Judea, because the religious rulers there had plotted to kill him.  Jesus is following a divine schedule which His Father had given Him.  These men could not touch him until His time had come.

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, A Woman Which Was a Sinner

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, A Woman Which Was a Sinner

Jesus was known as “a friend of publicans and sinners,” but it was a title that was hissed at Him out of contempt.  But I am glad that He was a friend to sinners and of the worst people, because now I know He will not refuse to associate with me.

The Period Of The Judges, Samson's Return, Judges 15.1-8

The Period Of The Judges, Samson's Return, Judges 15.1-8

The family into which Samson married suffered a shocking disgrace in the eyes of their whole city when Samson rushed away without consummating the marriage, and since some time had evidently elapsed without Samson's making any appearance in his wife's home, one can readily understand the father-in-law's behavior in giving Samson's wife to the person we might call his "best man." The situation, however, could not have justified such an action. What is Samson’s response? He is furious; he vows revenge, and burns the corn of the Philistines; 3-5. They retaliate by burning Samson's wife and her father; 6. He is still infuriated, and when the Holy Spirit moves him, he slaughters a great many of them; 7, 8.

Harmony of the Gospels, Jesus’ New Directive for Forgiveness

Harmony of the Gospels, Jesus’ New Directive for Forgiveness

We All Have Experienced the Pain of Being Mistreated.
Every human being experiences mistreatment from others.
How we deal with it will go a long way toward determining our well being and happiness in life.

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, A Name Change

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen, A Name Change

Names were significant in the Old Testament.  Often they describe a person’s character.  The name Jacob, for example, meant “deceiver” or “supplanter.”  He definitely needed a name change!  The story of Jacob is about a person taking on a new nature and then taking on a new name to describe that new nature.

Yola

Pattern for Conduct in the Church

In Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus gave His procedure for dealing with people problems that arise within a church. There is no perfect church, because there are no perfect people. I heard a man say one time, “I wouldn’t belong to any church that would have me as a member. We are far from perfect, that’s why conflict is inevitable in the personal relationships between Christians.

Do you want to know what Jesus said about resolving disputes? Read http://harmonyofthegospels.yolasite.com The Bible has the answers.

A Godly Man

Yola

I want to speak about godly men today, because we live in an age, when it is difficult to identify what a godly man should be like.  So much of what we are told by the media, about “good” men, doesn’t line up with the Word of God. So, today, let’s go to the Bible, and using Joseph as our example, see if we can find out what it takes to be “a godly man.”

Paul's Epistle to the Romans

Paul's Epistle to the Romans

Although they knew God by His works, they did not glorify Him for who He is or thank Him for all He has done. Rather, they gave themselves over to futile philosophies and speculations about other gods, and as a result lost the capacity to see and think clearly. “Light rejected is light denied.” Those who don’t want to see lose the capacity to see.

The Period Of The Judges, Slaying of the Lion, Judges 14.5-9

The Period Of The Judges, Slaying of the Lion, Judges 14.5-9

In these five verses we have the documentation of one of the earliest exploits carried out by this hero of faith. We are told that a lion in his youthful prime attacks Samson. The wild mountain passes of Judah were the lairs of savage beasts; and most or all the "lions" mentioned in Scripture are in that wild country. His tearing apart and killing the shaggy monster, without any weapon in his hand, were accomplished by that superhuman courage and strength which the occasional influences of the Spirit enabled him to put forth, and when he, as he did on this occasion, and in such a place that was hidden from the eyes of others was gradually trained to have confidence in his strength and his God, and was prepared for the more public work to which he was destined.

Harmony of the Gospels

Harmony of the Gospels

I've just updated my site; Harmony of the Gospels. See what's changed at: http://harmonyofthegospels.yolasite.com  Added Chapter 52, "Parable of the Lost Sheep."

Harmony of the Gospels

Harmony of the Gospels

We must be confident that all those things that are spoken of in the Bible are true. That is the starting point for any study of scripture. If any part of it can be shown to be false, then all of the Word of God is suspect. The truth is very important to you and me and it was very important to the Gospel writers.

Teaching Sermons For Pastors and Laymen,Bible Sermons Online-Always Free

Jesus was very approachable, by all classes of people, as we shall see in today’s scripture lesson. It is the story of the sinful woman who worshiped Him, at a dinner given in the home of a well-to-do Pharisee.  The story begins with these words,And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.”
